Textbook on Factual programming-

This textbook has been created on Microsoft Publisher, to help inform readers on the aspects of factual programming. this information has been researched from the following URL's and have been altered to to my understanding.

i have also created a different blog post on an example of the issues in factual programming. the case study is on Channel 4's documentary "Pride and Prejudiced".

Evaluation of documentary

My documentary is based on the topic and question "Is technology making humans lazy?” The members that were included within the planning and producing of the project were Samsia Akhter and Shalini Yogamoorthy. Other actors and interviewees that have been accredited within the documentary are Hodan Mohamed, Samuel Abera and Samya Akhter.

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ELv1wq_uhU8&feature=relmfu

1. How well did you work in a group? Give specific examples.

I feel that I and Shalini worked well as a group as we kept each other constantly updated and informed on the process and production of the documentary. A few examples of how we worked well together are;

  • We was together throughout the duration of filming the scenes of the documentary
  • We made sure that we both gave our input towards the ideas and information for the documentary
  • We both equalled out our narration parts equally, to ensure that we are fair and we both have equal amount of credit for the video.
  • We both edited our own parts of the documentary and we both gave back feedback and took on board the choices and emotions of both members.
  • We ensured that we arranged appropriate timings and checked to make sure that we were both free on day when we had to record, plan or edit the project
  • And we both sacrificed our own time and stepped in for each other when we had tasks to complete and they were unavailable.

2. What difficulties did you have to face in the production of the video and how did you overcome them?

The difficulties that we faced during the production of the video is that we had problems sorting out who we was going to interview because some of the original interviewees that we was going to use were not available when we was, and some cancelled due to personal use.

We overcame this problem by asking our back-up interviewees that were willing to do the interview for us, and ensured that we collected all the correct and appropriate information from them.

Also some of the difficulties that we had to face are that on some days on filming the scenes, me and Shalini were not available on the same days, so we had to record individually.

We overcame this problem by making sure we met up before the day we was going to film, and discussed and recorded down what needs to be done, to ensure we took into account what both members of the group wanted.

3. In what ways does your media product use, develop or challenge forms and conventions of real media products?

One of the forms and conventions of my media product is the genre. The genre of my factual programming is a discussion documentary, which will be based on the views of technology. This means that it is a documentary which will be based on the views and looks on a topic. It is also a documentary which will trigger a discussion on the question of "is technology making humans lazy?"

Another one of the forms and conventions that my media product follows is the conventions of the modes of documentaries. The mode of our documentary is a expository mode, which means that it will follow the codes and conventions of:
·         they contain a "voice of God" narrator or commentator
·                     images are used to illustrate and back-up the voice over
·                     the visual motion picture has editing to help the story continue and back up the narrations
·                     contains a variety of footage, interviews, stills and archival material for evidence and support

To support the codes and conventions of the mode of the documentary, the video has included the use of a narrator and we have included different scenes/cuts/clips of the surrounding topics and equipment. The documentary also includes some clips of the interviewees and will be cut into the different sections.

Another code and convention that our documentary has followed are the libel and defamation rules on insuring that the information that has been included is not twisted to give a negative impact upon the an individual.

By following the legislations and codes of requirements of the Broadcasting Act 1994, BBC producers’ guidelines and Ofcom, we have made sure that the information is equal, not purposefully mis-interpreted to change the views of the viewer and made sure that all of the views and opinions have been portrayed properly and equally.

We have also made sure that we took into account of the interviewees permission, e.g. protected the rights and identity of the characters. we also made sure that we did not include any content that is illegal for the target audience age, e.g. violence, racial comments, sexual content, etc.

4. the strengths, weaknesses and improvements of the media product

The strengths of our final media product is that we have portrayed our point and topic of the documentary well, and we have used effective and famous scenes and products that the target audience are able to relate to. I feel we have also carried out efficient use of sound tracks, clips, camera angles, media conventions and equipment to help get the desired product.

The weakness of our media product is that it has some flaws in the sound, and we were not able to use a wide range of different interviewees to help us get a varied opinion of the topic. E.g. a disabled person who heavily relies upon technology in their daily life.

An improvement that i would like to make to our final media product is that i would have like to include more interviewees to help get a wider range of opinions and i would have liked to use a better camera and a tracking dolly to help the quality of the filming.

Preparation for evaluation, feedback

To help answer and evaluate my documentary, I have created a questionnaire for the audiences of the video to answer, to help me assess and collect the appropriate feedback.

The questionnaire will consist of 9 questions, and I will ask a collective sample of 15 watchers and request for their feedback. To make the questionnaire fair and unbiased, I am going to as equal amounts of male and female spectators, I will try to vary the age range and I will try to ask first time, unknown watchers, so they don't have any influence on answering the questions.

This will be the questionnaire:

The results wll be recorded and included within the final evalation of the documentary.

Assignment 1 – Issues in Factual Programming

part 2 of evidence and research for assignment.

in this post, i am going to be presenting examples of the following issues which producers face when creating a factual programme.

this information will be extracted and edited using classwork discussions and knowledge and the internet. the listed URLs are where the information was imported from:
http://www.channel4.com/programmes/proud-and-prejudiced/4od

examples found of each point

the documentary i am going to be looking at and basing my examples on the issues which occur with producers in factual programming is Channel 4's documentary called Proud & Prejudiced. this documentary is based on;

"Proud and Prejudiced is the story of two of the most controversial men in Britain.
Tommy Robinson, a tanning salon manager, is the leader of the English Defence League, the biggest far-right street protest movement for a generation.
Sayful Islam, a former tax inspector, heads a small group of Muslim extremists, who have become notorious for abusing British soldiers and burning poppies on Remembrance Day.
Both men enjoy a cult-like status with loyal followers, both are specialists in making highly inflammatory speeches and defying the authorities, and both are from the same town: Luton.
Caught in the middle is Sarah Allen, the leader of Luton Borough Council's 'Luton in Harmony' initiative, the official fight back against the town's reputation as a hotbed of extremism.
Filmed over the course of a year, this is an intimate portrait of the two men and how a dangerous local feud has become an alarming national drama."

accuracy - the documentary ensures that it includes accuracy within the factual documentary by getting correct statistics and ratios to back up theories. they also made sure that the documentary was accurate by getting the correct information and data on the topic.

balance - the documentary ensures that it provides the correct balance on the different views of the EDL and the small group of Muslim extremists.

impartiality - the documentary makes sure that they show the positive and negative aspects of the argument to catch the opinions from both groups and not favour any of the groups.

objectivity - the documentary is not really based on any objective outlooks because it is based on the thoughts and opinions of two different people, their beliefs and what they stand for.

subjectivity - the documentary uses the technique of subjectivity by allowing the leaders Sayful Islam and Tommy Robinson to express their views in personal interviews and records the feelings of the demonstrators.

opinion - the protagonists of the documntary express their opinions on their thoughts on the topic of the documentary and discussion.

bias - the documentary was non-biased making sure that they do not offend and favour any of the thoughts of the documentary, and they left the choice of opinion down to the viewer.

representation - the documentary shows and uses alot of representation on the two demonstrating groups and their leaders, and it also questions them on stereotypical views (e.g. Tommy being a thug and Sayful being a terrorist).

access - the documentary was able to access and show the real information of the two leaders, e.g. real names, where they are from and located, etc.

privacy - use of  privacy was used within the documentary due to safety and identity issues.

contract with viewer - the contract that this documentary had with the viewer is that it had warned them of strong language, upsetting scenes and offensive thoughts and behaviour.

creating and editing the documentary

At the start of the song, we will insert the sound track of  - Pass out "instrumental"- Tinie Tempah
this will help relate to the flashing and fast pacing images at the start of the video.

When the interviews appear within the video, we are going to insert - The Lazy Song "instrumental" (Bruno Mars)
This is so it will relate to the topic of relating technology with the laziness of humans.

To finish of the documentary, we are going to insert the sound track - I can transform ya - Chris Brown ft. Lil Wayne
this is so we can relate to the technological/machinery theme of our documentary

ethical considerations/permissions

to ensure that we are able to record and create our documentary to the full original plan and potential, we must get permission from the following organisations to use their facilities;
  • Sainsbury's
  • Primark
  • West Orchard shopping centre
  • local companies/buildings
we must also get permission from members of the public if they are allowed to be inside our documentary, and we must get consent from the interviewees. if they agree, i must also ask if they want their identity to be hidden and they physical features to be pixelized, due to privacy and confidentiality issues.

when interviewing and inputting opinions into the documentary, i must make sure that i follow the guidelines for libel and defamation rules on ensureing that the information is not twisted to give a negative impact upon an individual.

research process for my documentary

to ensure that i collect and present the correct and relevent information on the opinion of my documentary on "is technology making humans lazier?", i will
  • research different gadgets which have tasks, uses and apps on making life easier,
  • i will interview a small sample of people to get their view and opinion on the statement
  • i will look at existing documentarys and talks which are based on the same ideology
  • i will look at the counter arguement and get views on it for a biased documentary
My documentary will be a open discussion based documentary, which will give all sides of the statement on is technology making humans lazier.

aspects which will affect my documentary

Documentary aspects part 2
What's the purpose?

the purpose of my documentary will be to raise awareness of how technology is making humans more lazy and how we are slowly evolving to become dependant upon machinery in the 21st century. We are also losing our ability to fend for ourselves thanks to the technological era that we live in.

but the purpose of this documentary will also show the counter argument of how technology is making lives for less able people more easier, and helping to extend human lifespan, save lives, create new cures and machinery to save lives and achieve goals and explore concepts that no human is able to do without the help of technology.

my documentary wll be based on more opinionated views and it will contain a couple of facts and statistics which will be used to help back up some opinions. my documetary will also contain different stories and overviews of people, who have had an impact on technology.

Who's the audience?

the audience for my documentary will be for both male and females, but will target the age range of 16 to 45. This is because this is the main target range of technology users, and this is the focus group which understands the defferent concepts of technology, as they grew up and matured with technology around them.

the documentary will also focus on the older generation, and their perspectives on how technology has changed society and how it has helped them. but due to the technical talk and aspects included within the documentary, it will be a struggle for them to understand.

Analysis and genre aspects of my documentary

Documentary aspects

Construction of my documentary:

The construction of my documentary will be done using a HD camcorder, tripod, voice recorder, microphone, dolly/tracker and different equipment that relates to the topic (xbox kinect, washing machines, etc).

the genre of my factual programming is that it will be a discussion documentrary based on the views of technology. also, the mode of our documentary will be of a expository mode, which means that it will follow the codes and conventions of:
they contain a "voice of God" narrator or commentator
  • images are used to illustrate and back-up the voice over
  • the visual motion picture has editing to help the story continue and back up the narrations
  • contains a variety of footage, interviews, stills and archival material for evidence and support
This means that the video will need a narrator and will include different scenes/cuts/clips of the surrounding topics and equipment. The documentary will also include some clips of the interviewees and will be cut into the different sections.

the full interview will be recorded visually and auditarily so it can be used in different contexts within the documentary.

the documentary will containt various different angles and shots (high angle, close up, over the shoulder, etc) and the camera will be panned, zoomed and tilted on different scenes to focus or expand on different scenes/surroundings.

A story to tell; Summarization

My summarization on a documentary.

In today's lesson, we had a class discussion on different modes and types of documentaries. We watched a couple of examples* and we concluded that the purpose of documentaries are to express peoples views on different aspects, (both for and against counter arguments), it is a method of opinion and it is a technique of persuasion on different topics.

Some documentaries can be inspirational, others can be informative. Some are biographical, but it can be autobiographical too. Some documentaries are based on reliable, hard and blatent facts, while others can be a source of opinions gathered from a sizable ratio of mankind. But no matter the purpose and topic of the documentary, it is always about somebody's story, and expressing themselves and outlooks on life.

We also looked into a documentary maker called "...", who did a long feature documentary on different people in differents states in America^. He achieved this by going on a Aerican road trip and interviewed random people that he bumped into. The purpose of this documetary was to show the variety of people and personalities that are in America and how they ALL have a story to tell... This raised discussion and thoughts within class, and we was told to record and share our stories in life.

I think it is a undebatable fact that everybody has a story to tell and that is what determines everybodies view on how they see the world and life.

My documentary (crew list)

For my five minute documentary, I will be working with Shalini Yogamoorthy to help produce and direct the media production.

Within the documentary, the crew will not be visible in the scenes, as our documentary mode is a expository mode. This means that the crew will not appear in the takes, but we will be speaking/narrating overhead.

There wont be any protagonists within our documentary as the production topic is widely based and not focused on one person. but we will be including random members of the public and personal contacts to give their overview on the topic.

The documentary is going to be based on counter arguments too, because not everybody agrees with this perspective. The use of modern technology is designed to help humans who are less abled too.

technology ideas

Ideas of different technology products to put and talk about in my documentary

  • Xbox 360 and Kinect
  • Smart phones (Apps, markets and operating systems)
  • Washing machines and dishwashers
  • Electrical coolers and heaters (central heating and air conditioning)
  • Cookers
  • Iphone 4S (siri)
  • electrical beauty products (nail varnish dryers, etc).
  • Baby mobiles and soothers
  • mobility scooters
  • escalators and lifts
  • electronic musical instruments
  • transportation
  • electronic tills and scanners
  • computers/laptops (DTP's and Office software)
  • social networking websites, emails and messenger services.

Talks and documentaries lightly exploring my documentary idea.

The purpose of the post is to help research different documentaries which already touch and explore my documentary concept idea oh "how technology is making humans more lazy".

These videos have been referenced from Youtube.

My initial idea for the documentary.

Description of my documentary idea

From the post of "brainstorm of document ideas", I have chosen to do my documentary on the idea of "how technology is making humans more lazy". I have chosen this idea because it is a interesting topic which is affecting everybody in the 21st century at this moment in time. It is also a problem which will rapidly grow within the next 10 years, due to the technological era we are living in.

The documentary mode will be a expository mode type of documentary. This means that my documentary will follow the codes and conventions of:
  • they contain a "voice of God" narrator or commentator
  • images are used to illustrate and back-up the voice over
  • the visual motion picture has editing to help the story continue and back up the narrations
  • contains a variety of footage, interviews, stills and archival material for evidence and support
This documentary will explore the concepts and methods of technology which is making humans lose the ability to live and fend for themselves. It will show how technology is designed to do the simplest of tasks, "claiming" to make humans jobs more easy. But as technology is advancing and growing with a boom, more products are being made to help with more advanced tasks.

Within the documentary, I will relate the topic to the Disney Pixar film of Wall-e. This is because within this movie, it shows how humans have soiled an polluted the Earth and the have moved into outer space as the planet cannot cope with the levels of pollution from excess use of technology.

Also in the movie, humans have become useless obese beings, who have their every need attended to, thanks to technology. From eating to breathing to moving and entertainment, technology is their making humans less able to fend for themselves.

At the end of the documentary, I am going to express some ideas which people can do to help lessen this problem and I will include different peoples perspective on the topic (for and against counter arguments).
